You're on my Radar!
Hello Family & Friends!
It is dreary today in Dallas. We are actually under an “ice storm warning.” Here’s something I’m not used to seeing:
There’s PINK on our radar! Being from Florida, I’m used to seeing green, sometimes yellow during a hurricane, but pink is another story all together. Pink means “freezing rain,” which by the way is different from snow or sleet. Freezing rain is when the rain falls in liquid form and the ground is so cold it freezes on contact. Or at least that’s what the weatherman said this morning while I was gazelling in the other room. (Around the time Rowdy decided it was too cold to do his normal business outside.)
Works been busy for us, so weekends have been so NOT busy to make up for it. We watched six movies this past weekend so we wouldn’t have to do anything. Saturday was the Starship Troopers marathon and Sunday was the Underworld marathon. We watched the newest one, Underworld: Rise of the Lycans (that’s nerd for werewolf) in the theater, and then went home and watched the other two. I know you’re dying to know, so I’ll tell you – YES, it was awesome!
Last week I was in Tempe, Arizona for a few days taking an Economic Development course for my certification. I take another one next month in Baltimore and then I’ll be done with my courses! I still have to sit for the exam in October, though. I hear that hardly anyone actually passes it the first time.
Tempe was pretty cool. It’s definitely a college town, so there’s this cool downtown area next to the campus called the Mill Avenue District that has lots of bars, shops and restaurants. My favorite was My Big Fat Greek Restaurant, which was recommended by a co-worker. It was so good!!
I was staying right off the main strip, so I was able to walk almost everywhere. I did manage to hitch a ride on the hotel’s airport shuttle to a local yarn store, though! Overall it was a fun trip…other than missing my plane out there and being on standby for four hours. Oh well! I caught an earlier flight on the way home so I guess that sort-of makes up for it.
Have a great week!

Rid of our FL hizzy!
Hello everyone!
We have GREAT news! We close on our house in Florida today!! Technically WE closed on it yesterday, because we had to fill out the paperwork here and then overnight it to Florida for the buyers to fill out today.
It is such a relief to finally be rid of the house. The whole process was a nightmare because the value of our house has gone down so much since we bought it. Even though we sold it for 100% market value, it was still about $30K less than what was left on our mortgage. Fortunately our bank approved the short-sale and we don’t have to pay back the difference!!! We got so lucky!
Other than that there really hasn’t been a whole lot going on here. Garrett and I have both been busy with work, so the weekends are time for us to be lazy. A few weekends ago we watched all the Ocean’s movies in one day.
It's also been really cold! Here’s a picture from a few weeks ago when we had ice cycles on everything. It was so pretty!
It's been so cold, in fact, that I knit a scarf for Garrett and he actually wore it!! Needless to say, it’s been too cold for me to do much exercising outdoors (plus the daylight is short), so last weekend we found a Gazelle exercise machine on Craig’s List for really cheap! We went to Decatur to get it, which is on the other side of Forth Worth, so we got to do some sight-seeing while we were out.
We passed by this petrified wood gas station, which we HAD to get a picture of!
This weekend we plan to check out some antique stores and watch Slumdog Millionaire. We can’t wait!!
Have a great weekend everyone!
P.S. This picture is for Shawn. He’ll know why!

First Post of 2009!
Our holiday was really nice! Garrett and I went out for a delicious dinner at one of our favorite local restaurants. They serve their beer in these great frosted goblets, and have the best seafood that we’ve been able to find in Texas.
New Year’s day we were both off and got out to ramble around some (as my mother would say). We discovered the wonder that is Central Market. That place is awesome! It’s like a gourmet grocery store for foodies. Unfortunately it’s about 25 minutes away, so we aren’t able to stop by on our way home, but we will be making special trips there when we are planning on company.
I also finished a new cardigan that I knitted. The name is the “Minimalist Cardigan” from Interweave Knits magazine. I think it's called that because it’s a fairly simple stitch and has no buttons.
Originally I’d hoped to have it finished by Christmas because of it's color, but it got put on hold for Christmas gift knitting. I finished knitting it in Florida and then started putting all the pieces together when we got back.
Last night, I made my first ham, which was delicious! We also had the traditional black-eyed peas to bring luck in the New Year. Apparently, we didn’t eat enough peas though, because when we went to leave for work this morning we discovered we’d been “burglarized.”
I say “burglarized” because prior to this morning I would have called it being "robbed," but the nice police officer that filed our report said there is definitely a difference. When you are “robbed” you are forced to give over your possessions. When you are “burglarized” the items are taken without your knowledge.
Here’s what happend to us – somehow someone managed to open our automatic garage door sometime last night or early this morning. (We think they may have had a universal remote that was the same frequency as ours.) Since we didn’t know this was even possible, my car was not locked. So they went into my car’s glove box and took my GPS system and an iPod dock. They also took a box of marketing materials for work out of my trunk and, to top it off, took the garage door remote off my car visor.
They didn’t try to come in the house, and nothing was damaged. They didn’t even touch Garrett’s motorcycle or the boxes of stuff in our garage, just my car. The police fingerprinted the car, but unfortunately didn’t find any usable prints. They did say that several other cars were broken into last night on our street, so if they find out who broke into one of the other ones they will be able to link them all together.
The scariest part is that they took the garage door remote, like they planned to come back. So we cleared out all the access codes and locked the door from the inside. We also got a new brand of remotes today to reconfigure to the garage so the old one won’t work anymore. We think that'll be enough. It was probobly just some kids out causing trouble since they're not in school this week. A little set-back in our day, but hopefully that’ll be it for a while!
We hope that you all had a great New Year’s Day!
Love,
Michaela
